The Process

Background

The NT Planning Scheme’s Land Use Framework for the future growth of Alice Springs is being reviewed in order to keep pace with changes in population, infrastructure and cultural and social imperatives over time.

The town’s central commercial area is also undergoing increased scrutiny in respect to functionality, the form of public spaces and increasing concerns over community safety and security.

The current Land Use Framework caters to a population threshold of 35,000 people. In order to cater for future growth and allow for planned development beyond this population horizon, it is timely to plan for and assess directions for the future development of Alice Springs.

Is there a need to amend the Land Use Framework? What are the current issues, concerns and imperatives that need to be reflected in the framework?

The forum will provide the opportunity for:

  • stakeholders to become informed and involved in the process of identifying options to cater for the future growth of the town of Alice Springs
    ;
  • stakeholders to develop an understanding of the demands and constraints relating to land release in Alice Springs;

  • discourse and feedback on issues surrounding CBD revitalisation;

  • the community to express views on environmentally sustainable development;

  • ensuring the NT Government’s role in and plans for future growth options for Alice Springs are accurately portrayed and communicated;

  • engaging the community in making the best choices for future growth; and

  • the NT Government to canvass views in the community and industry regarding growth options for Alice Springs.
